Hi,I've been having this issue with my (relatively new) Dell XPS. When I'm playing a game, the image can go from bright in one area to dark in another area. While I believe that's normal in some parts of the game (i.e.
I go from say a outdoor environment to maybe inside a cave), it happens in other parts of the game as well and the change from dark to dim (or dim to dark) in both cases is so sudden that it doesn't look normal. This has happened with at least two of the games I have played on my laptop, and I'm not exactly sure what the issue is but I think it has to do with the lighting effects in the games. Can I get some advice on what the problem is?Thank you. Hi bystander,I don't believe it's a power issue because the areas that go from bright to dim are always the same spots.
For example, when I'm playing an FPS and I'm looking at a spot that goes dim, if I turn away from that spot it gets brighter but if I turn back to that spot its dim again. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it clearly but the problem seems to be that it goes from dark to dim or vice versa so suddenly between areas that it's kind of a strain on the eyes. Also the only buttons I press are asdw when I play FPS or the numbers 1-0 when I'm playing an rpg.Thank you again.
A few days ago I noticed my Dell Inspiron 1526 Laptop LCD screen was dim. I checked to make sure the brightness settings were not changed, and that I was using A/C power.
My brightness setting is at 100% and my power cord is working fine. I have not spilled anything on my computer. This sort of happened out of the blue.
The strange thing is this, When I turn on my computer and it is starting up, the screen is bright and normal. However, while my startup programs are booting up in the taskbar menu in the bottom right corner of the screen, My computer suddenly goes dim. It is not completely black, but the change is obvious. I don't know if there is some kind of advanced setting that I can look at to see if I can fix this problem myself. I have been told my backlight may need to be replaced, but I find it strange that it is bright when I start up my laptop, but a minute or two later, it dims and stays dim.

First off, info on computer: This is an Asus Laptop running Windows 10 with an Intel i7-4720HQ Processor. So this has been a recurring issue I've had with my computer for a while now, but depending on if something on my screen is inherently darker or brighter my screen would then dim or brighten itself respectively.
I mean, already it makes no sense to dim already dark things to near unreadable levels and brighten already bright things to blinding quality, but what in the world is causing this to happen?I've tried several things already through googling, such as turning off adaptive brightening, disabling Intel's 'Power Saving Technology', and disabling some 3rd party display programs. Nothing seems to be solving the issue as it keeps rearing its horrifically ugly head every once in a while which prompts me to double check if all the changes I've made are still there, which they are. It makes playing games and video watching a horrendous experience because of the constant brightening and dimming. Honestly, who in their right mind thought this was a 'good' addition to computer functionality?Any help is appreciated.
The fading of the video in a laptop is not related to the videocard. Instead, this can be related to a number of things. Thebacklight could be failing, the inverter board may be on its wayout, or the cable attaching the assembly to the motherboard couldbe loose or going bad. Unlike our larger desktop LCD monitors, mostlaptop LCD panels are still lit with Cold Cathode FluorescentLights (CCFLs) and these do fail after a certain amount of time.Dissimilar to their bigger four-foot long cousins that are commonin offices around the world, these tend to fade rather than flickerand eventually just refuse to turn back on.
If this is the case, then you might find someone who will replace the backlight for youas the part is inexpensive (but the labor can be a bit costly) butmost often, you will end up replacing the LCD panel. A way to testwhether it is the backlight that has gone out is to try to shine alight in from the edge where the backlight is mounted and seewhether you can then view anything on the screen.
Hp Laptop Screen Goes Dim
(Of course, thecomputer has to be turned on to try this.)If the problem is the inverter board, then that is somethingthat is inexpensive in both parts and labor as it is easy to fixand not a complicated part. When this goes out, it quits deliveringthe current to energize the LCD panel and, thus, you will seenothing on the screen whether in its regular state or by trying theflashlight test that I mentioned above. In the case of the cable, to check whether it is loose requiresdisassembly of the top of the main part of the laptop as the cableis generally wrapped around the right screen hinge and connects tothe back of the motherboard around the same area. Sometimes it justworks itself loose from the motherboard due to all the jostling ofmoving the laptop around from place to place. If this is theproblem, then reseating the cable will be the order of the day. Ifthat is not the case and the cable itself is bad, then this couldnecessitate either a new cable or a new LCD panel assembly, depending on how the system is put together. Before all this, though, check to see whether the brightnessadjustments on your laptop can take care of your issue.
If not, then get your laptop to a professional repair shop for analysis anddiagnosis. Do not try to do these procedures yourself as you coulddo more harm than good due to all the sensitive parts and verysmall and weak wires that are within laptops.Let me know if you have any other questions or if I can be offurther assistance. LCD is run by the video card.
Also, it will be dimmer if runningon battery versus off of your adapter.energy saving technique. One thing you can try is find the Fn key, and then another key witha sun on it. The ones with the sun is on my arrow keys since thatis the button you push, along with the Fn key, to make your screenbrighter or darker. Someone may have pressed those keys withoutknowing it.
If those things do not make a difference then you willprobably need to be getting a new video card soon.
It could be a short in your power adaptor cable, break or crack in the power jack that the power adaptor plugs into, a failing power inverter (small long thin circuit board in the screen that converts DC back to AC) or some unusual setting in the power setting for the laptop. I have no idea what that last one actual is but I am guessing. Look at the notebook and note which lights are on when it is bright.
See if the external power light goes out when it goes dim. This happens when you go from plugged power to battery.

Laptop Screen Dimming And Brightening
Try to run the notebook with the battery out of the system for a day and see if you still have the problem. Maybe the battery is starting to short out.
